Art and Nature Experiences Top my 2024 List!

2024 has been an incredible year for art, nature, and connection, and as the year comes to a close, I wanted to reflect on some of my favorite moments. From chance encounters to creative adventures, these experiences have left a lasting impact. Here’s a countdown of my top 5 moments from the year:

5) A Half-Mile Loop of Paintings in Wright Park

In February, Erica from Middlebury Area Land Trust reached out to see if I might be interested in collaborating with the organization on an event. Little did she know, I'd been waiting for this moment! I pitched the idea of having an exhibition and workshop outside on the trail, and she said (I'm paraphrasing here) "sure! Let's do it!"

In May, I showcased 35 of my paintings along a half-mile trail loop at Wright Park. The event was a blend of art and the natural world, offering visitors a chance to experience my work in an open-air setting, something I had only dreamed about up to that point. Watching people interact with my paintings under the changing natural light was nothing short of magical.

4) Juna, the Dog Who Painted My Summer

During a hot day in July, I found myself painting at Woods Market Garden, surrounded by the vibrant energy of midsummer. That day, Juna, the resident dog, kept me company as I worked under the blazing sun. Her playful energy and occasional shade-seeking antics lightened the intensity of the heat. As someone who thrives on connection—whether to people, nature, or animals—Juna’s companionship while I worked on the "To the Woods" series reminded me how much small moments can enrich the creative process. I love building and sharing these connections as part of my work, and her company during my residence at Woods Market Garden is an example of the many connections I've made on my many journeys this year.

3) Teaching Plein Air Classes

One of the most rewarding parts of my year was teaching plein air classes with Middlebury Studio School. Guiding students of all levels to capture the essence of the landscape in their chosen mediums was inspiring. I loved seeing their progress as they embraced the fundamentals of composition and the joy of painting outdoors. There’s a certain magic in witnessing someone else’s creativity bloom—a feeling that always leaves me energized and fulfilled. I throughly believe that in order to remain relevant, artists should always have a "hand out to the next generation." The secret here is that I always learn from teaching; it makes me a better artist!

2) Sharing My Work in NYC

After a summer of painting in fields all over Vermont, I had the honor of traveling with my work and showing my paintings amongst the tall buildings of New York City. On a personal level, returning to a place where I spent so much of my career and sharing my current work with my friends and mentors was deeply meaningful. Their encouragement and feedback reaffirmed my artistic journey and reminded me how far I’ve come. It felt like a full-circle moment—one that celebrated growth, change, and the enduring connections that shape us.

1) Top Art and Nature Experiences: A Campfire in the Midst of Art

This moment takes the top spot because it epitomized everything I’ve aimed to achieve this year: blending art, community, and the natural world. During my exhibit at Spirit in Nature, a very kind woman stumbled upon the paintings during her daily walk. In a classic showing of Vermont character, she offered to bring me some firewood so I could make hot tea to warm myself from the fall chill. Sitting by the fire, surrounded by my art and the quiet beauty of the woods, felt like a perfect culmination of the Growing In Process 2024 journey.

This year has been a testament to the power of connection—to nature, to others, and to the creative spirit. As I look ahead to 2025, I’m filled with gratitude for everyone who has supported me along the way. Thank you for being part of this incredible year. Happy New Year, and here’s to more adventures ahead!
