The Sacred Circle: Reflection on Connection at Spirit in Nature

Updated: Nov 24

The Spirit in Nature Paths event was a beautiful convergence of art, nature, and community. Under golden sunlight filtering through the brilliant yellow fall foliage, attendees gathered to explore the trails, and to connect with art and one another. The energy from the visitors was palpable—whether they were learning about natural pigments or engaging in friendly conversation, the event felt like a celebration of both human and environmental connection.

Throughout the day, visitors not only observed the artwork displayed along the trails but also took part in a hands-on natural pigment demonstrations, experimenting with colors derived from charcoal from the sacred circle's fire and rocks foraged from the stream down the road. The responses were enthusiastic; many participants expressed curiosity and awe that these familiar materials could be transformed into vibrant colors. They wondered about other natural materials that might produce color and shared their thoughts with one another. What truly stood out, however, was the collective sense of creativity that rippled through the event. People were not just passively taking in the art—they were becoming a part of the artistic process.

One of the most special aspects of the event was how effortlessly connections were made between attendees. Strangers quickly became collaborators, sharing ideas and knowledge from their own backgrounds. Visitors exchanged thoughts on everything from eco-conscious practices to their personal artistic journeys. Kids made their own natural art to add to the trees; herbalists and geologists shared their expertise. By the end of the day, it was clear that the event had sparked not only artistic inspiration but also a deeper sense of community. Many left with new friends and a renewed excitement for both creativity and sustainability.

With the fall foliage in its full glory, the Spirit in Nature paths felt like walking through a living painting. The golden light and mild temperatures made the experience even more magical, as if nature itself was participating in the event. The sunlight danced off the trails and artwork, creating a dynamic atmosphere that changed from moment to moment.

As the weekend came to a close, I felt a pang of sadness and pride. As I took the paintings down from the trees I was reminded of the last words from Shakespeare's last play:

Our revels now are ended. These our actors,

As I foretold you, were all spirits and

Are melted into air, into thin air;

And – like the baseless fabric of this vision –

The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces,

The solemn temples, the great globe itself,

Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,

And like this insubstantial pageant faded,

Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff

As dreams are made on, and our little life

Is rounded with a sleep.

The event had come to a close, and I was sad to see it go. I am not understating when I say that the weekend was a career highlight for me; I truly felt that something magical happened that weekend in the sacred circle. I look forward to continuing to nurture the connections that were made in the woods over those beautiful sunny fall days.

Thank you for being a part of this wild and incredible journey.
